Strange eigenmodes, quantum chaos, and fluid mixing
The eigenmodes of very simple linear systems can exhibit intricate fractal-like patterns. The nature of this problem plays a major role in a variety of areas of pure and applied mathematics, yet can be understood in quite elementary terms. Areas involving this range of questions include ergodic theory, mixing of substances by fluids, and quantum chaos. I will give an overview of this subject in elementary terms, and provide Python-based software which serves as a launching point for undergraduate research projects on the subject.
