The Huxley-Wilberforce Debate of 1860
In 1860, at the annual meeting of the British Association, in a crowded room at Oxford, Thomas Henry Huxley and Bishop Samuel Wilberforce participated in a debate about Darwin and evolution. So, at least, goes the standard telling of the tale. But what really happened? How do we know? And why is the standard version better known than the true story? The debate about Darwin and evolution rages on today, but has anything new been added to the arguments of 1860? To what extent is the nature of today's debate set by the outcome of the one in 1860, and why should we care?
