The Activation of Carbon-Carbon Single Bonds: Teaching an Old Bond New Tricks

The carbon-carbon single bond is the primary framework of organic molecules due to its kinetic and thermodynamic stability. Thus the activation of these bonds is a highly unusual process that can rarely be accomplished. This talk explores some of the rare examples of the use of transition metal catalysts to achieve this transformation, and outlines my group’s effort to better understand carbon-carbon bond cleavage through a series of mechanistic investigations.
